Description | Torah finials depicting eagles, a crown and a lion, with nine bells, made by Franz Anton Gutwein (1759-1805), honoring Joseph Lazarus Levi (Löwenberg) (1774-1839) and his wife Emilie Esther Goldschmidt (1780-1848). Joseph Levi was the son of "Hoffaktor" Lazarus Levi (1743-1806), "parnas" of Jewish community (Kehilla) of Hohenems from 1785 until 1806, and himself "parnas" of the community from 1809 until 1814. 73.11b is inscribed in Hebrew: לכ' יוסף בפ"וה ליזר הוכעמס ("In honor of Yosef son of the community leader, Leyzer Hokhems); 73.11a is inscribed: וזוגתו מ' אסתר תי ("and his spouse, Esther, may she be blessed"). Both finials bear the date [5]560 of the Hebrew calendar (1799-1800). Several members of the Löwenberg family left Austria for San Francisco, California, in the course of the 19th century. Among them were Joseph's grandchildren, Emma Löwenberg (married Königsberger), born in Hohenems in 1838 and emigrated around 1860, who died in San Francisco in 1885; and Ernst Löwenberg, born in Hohenems in 1843.. Elias Löwenberg (born in Hohenems in 1820), a nephew of Joseph, also emigrated to San Francisco around 1860. | |
